Charice Featuring Iyaz

Charice has long counted Oprah Winfrey as one of herbiggest fans, but the 18-year-old captured a global audience in 2009with her easy-listening ballad "Note to God." On "Pyramid," Charice—withhelp from Iyaz—delivers a radio-friendly number about defying the oddswhile displaying the kind of vocal range that other budding pop starssimply don't have. Written by a large group of mostly young songwriters,"Pyramid" ultimately sounds believable because of Charice's convictionin her delivery. "Pyramid, we built this on a solid rock/ It feels justlike it's heaven's touch/ Together at the top, like a pyramid," shesings. An already high-charting dance mix loops Charice's "oh, oh, oh"runs to crank up the energy even further. Like any strong pop song, expect this one to scale multiple charts.

Charice

This young lady can definitely sing. That's the first impression that hits home as you listen to the 18-year-old Filipino sensation—and Oprah Winfrey fave—belt her heart out. Charice is making waves with catchy dance-pop single "Pyramid" (featuring fellow newcomer Iyaz), and also in that vein on her self-titled debut are noteworthy pop tracks "Reset," "Nobody's Singin' to Me" and "Nothing," whose vocal arrangements deftly showcase Charice's formidable chops. The big-voiced singer calls to mind a younger version of Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera and Celine Dion on soaring ballads about love and life, notably "In This Song" and "Note to God." But the set's stylistic shifts—from teen-oriented pop to a touch of rock ("In Love So Deep") to anthemic ballads—ultimately leaves you wondering just which audience Charice is eyeing: her teen peers or their moms. Though it doesn't hit on all cylinders, the album leaves no doubt as to Charice's talent—and promising future.
